Students Gain education in Advocacy at 2010 Lerners Cup
October 01, 2010
Robert
Glasgow (pictured left) was this year’s top oralist in the Lerners Cup,
Western Law’s upper year appellate advocacy competition.
The Lerners LLP Cup drew more than 60 students to moot questions
related to a child’s refusal to consent to a blood transfusion for
religious reasons. In addition to Glasgow, Jennifer Neiman and Jeffrey
Warnock (pictured below left with Michael Lerner) were honoured with the
Mr. Justice C.D. Stewart Trophy, which is awarded to the top team in
the preliminary round.
The finalists (who in addition to Glasgow, Neiman and Warnock included Brian Murnaghan, John Mather, Jeffrey Hamel, Domenic Polla, and Nicholas Gefucia) received an education in advocacy that they are unlikely to soon forget.
Appearing before a panel composed of Justice Gloria Epstein of the Court of Appeal for Ontario, Regional Senior Justice Edward Ducharme and Justice John McGarry of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and Michael Lerner of Lerners LLP, they all faced the difficult questions raised by A.C. v. Manitoba.
Western Law is grateful to the judges, practicing lawyers, and third
year law students who generously volunteered their time to act as judges
and otherwise assist with the moot.
Western Law is particularly grateful to Michael Lerner and Lerners
LLP for their generous and continued support of this competition.
