Summer After 1L Program (SA1L)

Four students dressed in professional attire

The Summer After 1L (SA1L) program provides select 1L students with ten weeks of paid legal experience after their first year of studies. SA1L enables students to apply their knowledge and build critical career skills while getting a head start in the professional legal world.

The program provides placements and internships through the Western Law Internship Program (WLIP), affiliated legal clinics, faculty-led research projects, and external placements with advocacy organizations, law firms, and corporate entities. Students are also welcome to submit proposals for funding for compelling legal research or practice areas that they wish to pursue.

"Working as a research assistant on Open Banking in the US, Australia, and Canada expanded my knowledge and improved my research and writing skills through regular feedback from my mentor. This rewarding experience has shaped my career aspirations, and I now feel more confident and prepared for future opportunities, particularly the 2L recruit."
