The Law School Admission Test (LSAT)

When should I write the LSAT?
You are the best judge of this based on the time you have available to prepare for the test. You should write when you are ready, i.e., when your practice scores – on multiple timed tests in simulated conditions – are sufficiently competitive. Start preparing for the test earlier than expected.

Is there any preferred time to write the LSAT?
Writing before you apply to law school is best.  Consider writing during the summer after your third year of university if you intend to apply in the fall for the following September intake. If you do well on your first attempt, we will not have to wait for an LSAT score in support of your application.  If you do not fare as well as expected, you can rewrite in the fall or in January.

How does Western Law treat multiple LSAT scores?
We review all scores but will use the highest for admission purposes. Generally, high scores on the first writing – or consistently high scores over multiple writings – are given greater weight.

If I take the LSAT after the November 1 application deadline, will my test score be considered?
Yes, and please ensure you have added your LSAC number to your OLSAS application.

How do I indicate I am writing a future LSAT after I have submitted my application?
Log into your OLSAS account and update your LSAT information.

How long is an LSAT test score valid?
For five years.

Does Western review the LSAT Argumentative Writing sample?
Yes.  We place great weight on this writing sample because we consider writing a critical skill for law school study and legal practice. We look for clear, concise, creative and well-developed submissions.

Should I take an LSAT preparation course?
Many applicants find preparation courses helpful.  Whether you do – and which one – will depend on your learning style, time, financial resources, and your preference for in-person or online study.

Are there any free LSAT preparation resources?
The Law School Admission Council offers LSAT preparation through LSAC’s LawHub. Some commercial LSAT preparation vendors also offer some free sample material. Finally, Western Law offers a free LSAT Prep Course every summer for Black, Indigenous, and low-income applicants.

How do I apply for a fee waiver for LSAC services?
Visit the LSAC fee waiver website for information and details about how to apply. Be sure to complete the Canadian fee waiver form. You should submit your application to LSAC four to six weeks before the registration deadline for the LSAT you wish to take.
