Western Law and the Tort Law Research Group (TLRG) are delighted to announce that the London law firm of Shillingtons LLP will be sponsoring the TLRG Public Lecture series for the 2018-19 academic year.

Led by veteran litigator Terry Shillington, Shillingtons LLP is a leading provider of insurance-related legal services to Ontario property and casualty insurers. The firm was founded in 1998 on the premise that a specialized practice could provide high quality legal services at a lower cost to the firm’s clients. That philosophy continues to guide the firm today.

“We are very grateful for this sponsorship,” said TLRG Co-Director Jason Neyers. “It allows us to continue to run one of the best tort law speaker series in the world. Shillingtons handles some very interesting and challenging tort law cases, so we could not be happier that the firm is working with us to support tort law scholarship”.

Two public lectures will be held in the 2018-19 academic year. On October 15, renowned legal theorist Professor Allan Beever of Auckland University of Technology will deliver an address entitled “Tort Law and the Tort System: From Vindictiveness to Vindication”.

On March 4, Professor Sarah Green of Bristol, a leading authority on virtual currencies, blockchain issues and wage theft, will examine the interface between tort law and technology.

Previous speakers in the series include a “who’s who” of leading tort academics and appellate court judges. An archive of these lectures can be found at:

The TLRG was founded in 2010 to consolidate Western's reputation as a leader in the study of tort law. Western has a long tradition of tort law scholarship and currently one-quarter of all Western Law faculty teach and publish in the area, including a leading treatise, The Law of Torts in Canada, and a leading casebook, Cases and Materials on the Law of Torts. TLRG members publish on diverse topics including the economic torts, public authority liability, vicarious liability, tort law theory, tort law and health care, and tort liability for climate change.
