Shivohum Nar, a second-year JD student at Western Law, represented Canadian youth at the G20 Youth Summit (Y20) in Johannesburg, South Africa, serving as the Canadian delegate in the Economic Development and Employment Track.
The Y20 brings together youth delegates from G20 member states to develop policy recommendations for G20 leaders. Throughout the summit, delegates negotiated and drafted proposals addressing global economic and employment challenges facing young people.
Shivohum's advocacy focused on labour rights and employment, skills and education, and sustainability. His contributions to the sustainability pillar were directly shaped by his experience as a legal intern at Rights and Accountability in Development (RAID) – an internship he secured after his first year at Western Law. At RAID, he researched international human rights, labour protections, and corporate accountability in mining industries, allowing him to bring practical legal research experience to the Y20 discussions.
Shivohum credits Western Law's curriculum and experiential learning opportunities with building his advocacy skills and preparing him for high-level policy negotiations. From classroom learning to competitive advocacy experiences, Western Law equipped him with the critical thinking and communication skills essential for international diplomacy.
"The Y20 Summit reaffirmed for me how deeply committed young people around the world are to improving the lives of others through inclusive public policy," said Shivohum. "Going forward, I hope to continue pursuing work that delivers meaningful public impact at the intersection of law, policy, and diplomacy."
The achievement reflects Western Law's commitment to developing completeness of thinking and habits of leadership – competencies that serve graduates throughout their careers, whether in legal practice, business, public service, diplomacy, or other fields where strategic thinking and perspective matter.
