The 2011 Cherniak Cup
November 22, 2011
The final round of the 2011 Cherniak Cup, Western Law's internal trial advocacy competition, took place on November 21, and was presided over by Madam Justice Helen Rady of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and scored by Andrea Plumb of Lerners LLP, Doug Ferguson of Community Legal Services, and Andrew Camman of Polishuk, Camman & Steele.
One hundred and sixteen students competed in 29 preliminary rounds held on November 14 and 15 and approximately 60 other students were involved as witnesses for the trials. First-year student Odette Ansell (pictured left) was the winner of the competition. The other seven students competing in the final rounds were Jacob Goldberg, Gillian Howe, Carolyn McKeen, Julia McNabb, Julie Menten, Sophie Stoyan and George Tory.
At the reception Justice Rady and Andrea Plumb both commended all the finalists for their outstanding work. Professor Chris Sherrin expressed his appreciation to Lerners LLP for its continued support of this competition and thanked the many others who had made this year’s competition possible, including Nanette Love, Sylvia Davis of Lerners LLP, and all the members of the local bar who generously donated their time and expertise during the preliminary rounds.
