Michala Meiselles

Michala Meiselles is a Senior Law Lecturer, and Academic Board Representative at the University of Derby (England). Her research, teaching and consultancy focus on banking, compliance (anti-money laundering, anti-bribery and corruption, counter-terrorist financing, sanctions), cross-border commercial agreements, technology transfer and franchising.

At the Law School of University of Derby, she leads and teaches on three modules (one on the undergraduate programme and two on the graduate programme). On the LL.B. programme at the Law School, she teaches commercial and consumer law, and on the LL.M. programme, she teaches a module on international banking and finance law (covering compliance and Islamic finance), and national and international sales of goods (covering international commercial agreements and private international law).

Since 2014, she has been teaching international business law for the JD program at Western Law (Law School, University of Western Ontario).

Ms Meiselles qualified as a Solicitor in England and Wales in 1999, after working as a legal advisor for three years, at a pro-bono clinic in Manchester City Centre. Upon qualification, she joined Berrymans Lace Mawer, a leading English law firm, where she practised commercial and insurance litigation, representing banks, governmental bodies, multinationals and insurance companies.

In 2003, Ms Meiselles completed an LL.M. in European and International Law and Policy at Manchester University, writing a thesis on human rights law in the European Union, under the supervision of Professor Josephine Shaw.

After interning for a year at the French branch of the European Commission, in 2007, she was offered the position of Academic Director at the Law School of Université Jean Moulin. A year after her appointment, Ms Meiselles founded two graduate degree programmes for the Law School (LL.M. in International and European Law and graduate diploma in International and European Law). From 2008 until 2012 she managed both programmes.

Ms Meiselles has been lecturing for over fifteen years, in the fields of corporate law, international trade law, European law and policy, international business law and international commercial agreement. She holds and has held several visiting positions at business and law schools in Europe, the Middle East and North America, including Université Jean Moulin (France), Aix Marseille Université (France), Université Cergy Pontoise (France), UNISOB (Italy), Radzyner School of Law at the Interdisciplinary Centre (Israel) and the University of Georgia in Athens (US).

Research Interests

There are a number of strands to the research of Ms Meiselles:

Compliance - European and international regulation of AML, CTF and ABC

European corporate law - Corporate mobility, freedom of establishment, supranational corporate forms, and reform of EU corporate law

International commercial agreements - Cross-border agreements with a particular focus on dispute resolution (judicial and extra-judicial), the treaties governing jurisdiction, choice of law, and recognition and enforcement of judgements and arbitral awards, and EU competition law and policy

Technology transfer - Research and development, technology transfer, licensing and assignment, reciprocal and non-reciprocal arrangements

Franchising - Reform of franchise law through a comparative prism
