Thornton Grout Finnigan LLP renews Student Internship
December 05, 2012
Thornton Grout Finnigan LLP (TGF) has generously donated $30,000 to continue their support of the Thornton Grout Finnigan LLP International Student Internship in Bankruptcy & Insolvency Law for the next three years. The internship supports a student to intern with the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C.
Thornton Grout Finnigan LLP is a restructuring and litigation boutique firm founded by Western Law grads Robert Thornton '82 and John Finnigan ’82.
“We’re very grateful to TGF for their ongoing support of our internship program,” says Professor Sara Seck, Co-Director of the International Law Internship Program.
“This unique internship opportunity provides our students with both real-world insolvency law experience, and the opportunity to make a difference by contributing to the poverty alleviation mandate of the World Bank Group, the world's largest and most important development finance institution,” she adds.
Law student Nina Plotnik (pictured left) participated in the summer internship in 2012 and found the experience invaluable.
Plotnik worked as an intern for the Debt Resolution and Business Exit Team. The team specializes in providing technical assistance in bankruptcy and insolvency law to developing countries.
“The internship allowed me to observe and participate in two different projects in Africa and assess their impact on the economy,” notes Plotnik.
“This led me to develop a deeper appreciation for the role of bankruptcy and insolvency regimes in private sector development across the globe. Working under the guidance of the group leader and his team of experts was an inspiring learning opportunity.”
The World Bank, located in Washington D.C., provides national governments around the world with advice on improving the practical functioning of domestic insolvency systems.
Western Law’s International Summer Law Internship Program (ISLIP) was launched in March 2006, to provide Western Law students with interesting and substantive summer international law internship placements. The ISLIP provides students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of international and comparative law and international issues while applying their legal knowledge and skills in a professional environment. Through the generosity of various donors and the Faculty of Law, the program provides financial support towards the ISLIP placements.
