BLG Moot 2010
From L to R: Robert Kitchen (Lawyer, BLG), Alanda McLean (2L) Winner, Julie Menten (2L) Winner and Top Oralist, Lisa Cabel (Lawyer, BLG)

The eleventh annual Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) LLP Labour and Employment Law Oral Advocacy Competition was held at Western Law on Wednesday, October 27.

Ten teams of two from Western Law and two teams of two from Windsor competed with senior lawyers from BLG acting as judges.

Second year Western Law students Alanda McLean and Julie Menten were the winning team with Menten also being named Top Oralist.

The BLG moot problem is based on a realistic labour or employment law situation with several legal issues. The best employer-side and employee-side teams are selected to compete in the championship round.

This year's problem was based on the Alberta Court of Appeal decision in Alberta (Human Rights and Citizenship Commission) v. Kellogg Brown and Root (Canada) involving issues surrounding pre-employment drug testing and discrimination.

An evening banquet with awards presentation followed the day's competition. Western Law would like to thank BLG for their generous ongoing support of this Moot.
