Cherniak Cup Competition Focuses on Trial Advocacy

The Cherniak Cup, sponsored by Lerners LLP, is the Faculty’s internal trial advocacy competition.

Ninety-five students competed in 25 preliminary rounds held on November 9 and 10. Approximately 50 other students were involved as witnesses for the trials.

Justice Lynne Leitch of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice presided over the final rounds, which were also scored by Marinus Lamers of Lerners LLP, Doug Ferguson of Community Legal Services, and Andrew Camman of Polishuk, Camman & Steele.

The other seven competitors in the final rounds were Lauren Dalton, Jessica Elie, Meaghan Hourigan, Julie Menten, Nina Plotnik, Sebastian Schmoranz and Rob Wulkan. At the reception after the competition, Marinus Lamers of Lerners LLP commended all the finalists for their outstanding work and presented the trophy to the winner.

Professor Chris Sherrin expressed his appreciation to Lerners LLP for its continued support for this competition. He also thanked the many other people who had made this year’s competition possible, including Nanette Love, Sylvia Davis of Lerners LLP, Joyce Thomas of Polishuk, Camman & Steele, Rasha El-Tawil of Siskinds LLP, Anna Szczurko of Siskinds LLP, Nicole Stoner, Meagan Williams, Paul Morrison and Kelby Carter.
