The Cherniak Cup

November 13, 2009

The 2009 Cherniak Cup was won last night by Meagan Williams, a second-year student. Justice Helen Rady of the Superior Court of Justice presided over the final rounds, which were also scored by Earl Cherniak Q.C. of Lerners LLP, Doug Ferguson of Community Legal Services, and Andrew Camman of Polishuk, Camman & Steele.

The other seven competitors in the final rounds were Joseph Blinick, Kelby Carter, Tim Chapman-Smith, Julie Menten, Paul Morrison, Jenny Neiman, and Genna Wood.

At the reception after the competition, Justice Rady commended all the finalists for their outstanding work. Earl Cherniak of Lerners LLP presented the Cherniak Cup to the winner. Professor Chi Carmody expressed his appreciation to Lerners LLP for its continued support for this competition.

He also thanked the many other people who had made this year’s competition possible, including Nanette Love, Sylvia Davis of Lerners LLP, Prof. Valerie Oosterveld, Prof. Erika Chamberlain and Joyce Thomas of Judith Hull & Associates.

The Cherniak Cup is the Faculty’s internal trial advocacy competition. The competition is sponsored by Lerners LLP. This year’s problem involved an action for losses incurred in futures trading. It featured 58 competitors in 15 preliminary rounds held on November 11 and 12. Approximately 30 other students were involved as witnesses for the trials.
