Memorial Award to honour Kanika Suri '12

May 28, 2012

The Western Law community is mourning the death of Kanika Suri, a graduate from the class of 2012, who died Friday, April 27.

To honour her memory Western Law has established the Nidhi Kanika Suri Memorial Award.

“I remember Kanika as a bright light in our first year small group class,” says Professor Sara Seck.  “She was always cheerful and engaged, challenging everyone to think critically, especially about environmental issues. She will be greatly missed.”

Prior to attending Western Law, Kanika received a BA in Environmental and Political Science from the University of Michigan. She also had worked as an environmental consultant in Alberta in the oil and gas industry.

Kanika began her articling term with Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC) in January 2012 where she also summered.

“Kanika had a passion for the environment and she continued to pursue this interest while she studied the law and began her career,” says Mike Kaplan, Managing Partner at FMC.

“Anyone who had the good fortune to have known Kanika will no doubt have been impressed with her vibrant personality, her keen sense of curiosity, as well as her dedication to the law. Kanika showed great promise and she will be missed by her many friends and colleagues at FMC.”

The firm has committed a $5,000 donation towards the award. The goal is to raise $25,000 to endow the award in her honour.
